There has been some rumbling about a new Manitou double-clamp fork since Sea Otter when pictures started flooding in from everywhere. There have been all sorts of hypothesizing about it, from its name, to its potential as a fork. All guessing aside, when Manitou puts out a fork recently they have kicked some serious butt, so I was stoked to get some hard-core 411 straight from the horseÂ’s mouth. This is the official word from Manitou on the new Travis Double Clamp for (sadly only available as of late August of 2005):

The new Travis fork is making the rounds. Big new family for us, replaces the Dorado and the Sherman families. 34mm stanchions. 150mm travel on the 1.125” forks, 180mm or 203 mm in either 1.5” or dual crown (yes, there is a 203mm singlecrown). ... the response we’ve gotten from the pros (DH and freeride) is that it rides better than anything out there. Including Dorado.

Manitou
It seemed that 2004 was a bit of a rough year for Manitou - or maybe just for the Dorado. The MRD X-Works Dorado project was abandoned and very few deliveries of any type of Dorado were made. At the same time the Sherman program gained momentum and spec on bikes with legitimate freeride pedigrees. Their SPV rear shocks saw a lot of spec as well on top shelf bikes like the Specialized Demo 9.

I still don"t think I"ve ridden a fork I"ve liked as much as the 2003 Dorado and that"s sad because the Dorado is no more. For 2006 Manitou is rolling out the Travis program. At the top end of the line Travis will use an updated version of the SPV system found in the Sherman Slider + as well as forks like the Sherman Firefly. Many riders felt that a weakness of the SPV system was it"s inability to react to small bumps. To respond to this the goals of the SPV have been narrowed some. Instead of providing a platform as well as bottom out resistance the new system will focus on the bottom out while a cartridge will deal with the rest of the compression damping.

The Manitou Travis with 8" of travel and 34mm stanchions. Black is beautiful.

Riders like myself had a few other concerns about the Sherman Slider. The narrow stance gave it a large turning radius and the lack of clearance at the arch limited tire choice. Besides that though it is a stiff, reliable fork that performs well. The Travis dual crown has a stance that would make John Wayne proud along with plenty of tire clearance. The Travis passed bike shop fork test (apply front brake and bounce on handlebars) like an honours student. In fact it felt as good as any fork I have bounced on. Obviously this isn"t a reliable way to test the performance of a fork but given Manitou"s record I"m expecting very good things indeed.

en nog een review:
A fork so good it took the ShoreÂ’s resident Boogeyman and turned him into a friendly (and surprisingly polite) forest gnome.

ManitouÂ’s new Travis fork is the best long-travel fork IÂ’ve ever ridden. As one of the first people to ride it (five laps on the ShoreÂ’s infamous Seymour Mountain no less), I can attest to the forkÂ’s performance with wholehearted experience. Not only did I emerge unscathed, I did the whole fun times 1000 thing.

The Travis features some new design improvements from Manitou, all of which seem focused on increasing both supple action and stiffness. The 203mm travel fork uses an all new suspension platform Manitou is calling Intrinsic, a “speed-sensitive, low platform, low resistance” variation of Manitou’s tried and true SPV damping system. The most notable change being that the SPV is pressurized by a spring rather than air, enabling the SPV valve to be open during the initial part of the travel stroke.

To increase stiffness, 34-mm aluminum stanchions run inside ovalized casings—what Manitou is calling “parabolic design mag RA casting.” The arch between castings is more upright, more compact and closer to the seal area as compared to other Manitou forks. Inside a cartridge damper uses open bath lubrication with a distinct design focus on resisting brake dive and bottoming. Both the 1.5 single crown and the double crown version feature a significant 203mm of travel and weigh in at a very manageable 6.5 pounds and 7 pounds respectively.

The rideÂ…
Oh geez. Where do I start? The best comparison I can make is the Travis felt like rocking a brand new truck. Quiet and tight. Suppleness has been achieved in a big way.

On the many thousands of steep rollaways on the Shore, where a big old root is exactly a wheel length away from the bottom of the drop, positioned perfectly to send you ass over tea kettle, the Travis just kept on rolling on like it was no big deal. I can barely remember being pitched forward, nor did I endo once (and believe me, when on the Shore, endos are my favorite move).

On hucks the Travis took everything I could muster the cojones to throwÂ…with barely a sound no less. I rode both the double and the single crown and could hardly tell a difference in stiffness and travel depth. If you were a big fan of the Dorado, what many downhillers and big bike riders have long heralded as the fork of forks, youÂ’ll be over the moon when you get on the Travis.

Super wreed. Met name die single crowns vind ik echt subliem.
Nu nog eventjes wachten op de reviews.
